Don't Argue For its Own Sake
in the course of my observation, these disputing, contradicting, and confuting people are generally unfortunate in their affairs. They get victory sometimes, but they never get good will, which would be of more use to them.


Franklin on why it isn't a good idea to argue with people. When he was a youth he used to take pleasure in showing people the absurdity of their beliefs. He loved Socrates and would often play the part, until he was adept at making people look foolish. This was a bad habit that Franklin says he had to get rid of.
