"He noticed sallow cheeks, a funny nose, a wart on a receding chin, a stomach squashed against the edge of a table. He loved these sights. What these could do, he could do better. He smiled. Peter Keating needed his fellow men."
The context here is that Peter is on the first day of a new job at the most respected architecture firm in America. At first he is anxious, but then he notices the other men who work there, and knows he can beat them. Some men try to achieve success by beating other men. They see life as a big competition, and to be successful means that other men must be the losers. These men are always comparing themselves to and getting their sense of identity from others.
